Of course, this begs the question: why is kapok so wildly unknown when it has so many valuable benefits?
The answer is easy. Although kapok was known and used industrially in Europe until the 1950s, knowledge about the natural fibre was short-lived. Why? With the triumph of synthetic materials such as cold foam, polyester and latex, kapok was used less and less as an expensive filling material.

Since kapok trees produce more oxygen than is needed for transport from the forest to the consumer, kapok fibres are CO2-neutral.

No spraying agents are necessary for the commercial cultivation of kapok. Kapok isn’t grown in monocultures; hence, it relies entirely upon the natural cycles of nature. When harvest season starts, the ripe fruits simply fall from the sky. With a size of up to 70 metres, kapok trees are true giants in the jungle. Local farmers collect the pods and lay them in the sun to dry. No further treatment is necessary before processing the kapok as a resource.
Another great advantage is that wild-growing trees make them a secure source of income for local farmers and their families. This is also why rainforests with kapok trees aren’t cleared for palm oil or cotton crops.
Why kapok is particularly suited for mattresses and cushions
With an air content of 80% (!), kapok fibre is one of the lightest plant fibres on earth. In addition, it has a fine wax coating that has a water-resistant effect. This is also the reason why lifebelts used to be made of kapok. These properties make kapok the ideal filling material for mattresses. Kapok mattresses provide a consistently dry sleeping environment. Unlike many other mattress fillings, kapok is not a nesting ground for bugs and insects. Its natural bitterness and high air content make kapok a natural repellant of mites and moths. This makes kapok mattresses an excellent choice for everyone, including people with allergies.
